Services To The Needy

The activities of Kolel Chibas Jerusalem consists of many different areas, each of which fills and important need among the underprivileged in the holy land.
The largest items in the kolel's over 4 million dollar budget , is the "Chalukah" the distribution of quarterly stipends to families that can not make ends meet. Families are chosen carefully, their eligibility determined by a variety of factors such as family size and level of income.
This past Rosh Hashana, the Kolel distributed approximately $850,000 to over 4,000 families consisting of a total of over 16,000 persons. The annual amount expended last year was over 3 million dollars. Providing these quarterly payments (Chalukah) to a carefully selected list of eligible families, is a tradition of the Kolel that goes back over years. At that time, the major means of support for the entire Yishuv in Eretz Yisrael was the money received by families from their communities of origin in Europe. Kolel Chibas Jerusalem was founded by the Rabbinical leadership of galicia, Poland and it has continued this aid in support of worthy dedicated Torah families uninterrupted, for one and a half centuries.

The assistance offered by the Kolel is not limited to the stipends. There are several other areas in which the organization provides invaluable and vital relief to anyone who has demonstrated a need for their particular service.

Families making a wedding can turn to the Kolel for help in paying the extraordinary expenses involved. Hundreds of families were helped during the past year and in most cases, these people would have found it almost impossible to arrange their Simchas without the money they received from the Kolel.

When a new baby is born, or if, unfortunately, a serious illness strikes a member of a family, the Kolel helps pay for the medical expenses that are not covered by Israel's medical benefits.
Families that are not on the Chalukah list can still get special help before Pesach or Rosh Hashanah to ease the burdens generated by the additional expenses of the Yomim Tovim. Last year, the total cost of the assistance provided by the Kolel in these special situations, exceeded $475,000.

Kolel Chibas Jerusalem operates 3 dental clinics which are used by over 5,000 people annually for full range dental treatment. Clients pay 1/3 of the cost of treatment and the Kolel, at a yearly cost of over $150,000, picks up the tab for the other two thirds.

Another very important and popular service is a subsidized clothing store which stocks clothing, hats, shoes - anything that is worn by men, women and children of all ages, in large varieties and in all sizes. Patrons of the store save a minimum of 40% on all of their purchases. This operation costs the Kolel over $150,000 a year

Anyone who contemplates this wide range of services and the enormous amounts of money expended, must conclude that Kolel Chibas Jerusalem is an outstanding organization that the deserves the support of all members of the Torah community
